Split completely lives up to its promise, at least the old town does. Diocletian's Roman palace, built in the second century has been turned into a mediaeval rabbit warren based upon borrowed dressed stones used and reused over time. It's magical and well worth visiting. The basement, once cleaned of several hundred years worth of sewerage, is still an intact Roman building and magnificent.
Today we are in another marina to the north east of Split where we will finally have Lyra lifted and bottom scrubbed. From here we can see in the distance the less lovely side of Split- 1970s tower blocks displaying the sort of brutalist architecture that UK planners of the time would have loved. The Tito years have not been kind to Croatia's physical heritage.
